This is meant to be used in a Usage notes section like this:

to display a note that the term is usually written in kana. Most dictionaries note the same fact by putting a triangle or an "x" in superscript next to the seldom-used kanji in the term. EDICT uses the abbreviation uk for "usually kana", hence the name of this template.
