Documentation for Template:eu-IPA. [edit]
This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.
Use {{eu-pr}} instead.
Use {{eu-pr}} instead of invoking this template directly. {{eu-pr}} works similarly to this template but autogenerates rhymes and hyphenation as well as pronunciation.

This template uses Module:eu-pron to convert from spelling to pronunciation.

The generated pronunciation is commonly used in formal settings (education, news broadcasts, speeches...). It is almost equivalent to the one prescribed by Euskaltzaindia for the standard language, but with /x/ as the default pronunciation of <j>.

This template shouldn't be used for exclusively dialectal terms, or for dialectal pronunciations of standard terms.

Usage[edit]

Parameters[edit]

Normally, call this template with no parameters, and it will automatically generate the pronunciation for the page name.

NOTE: The invocation of {{eu-IPA}} should occur on a line by itself. Do not put a bullet mark (*) before it. The bullet mark is generated by the template.

|1=
Phonetic respelling of word or phrase. Needed for some terms whose pronunciation does not match the normal rules (see below). It can also be used to specify the word or phrase to generate the pronunciation for, when used on a documentation or test page.
|bullets=
Number of bullet marks to place before the generated pronunciation. Defaults to 1.
|pre=
Text to place before the generated pronunciation.
|post=
Text to place after the generated pronunciation.
|ref=
Text to place after the generated pronunciation, but without a space between the pronunciation and the text. Intended for references.

Useful respellings[edit]

For the correct display of some diphthongs, a respelling is required:

  • {{eu-IPA|Antigwa}}: IPA(key): /antiɡwa/, [ãn̪.t̪i.ɣ̞wa]
  • {{eu-IPA|Abadyano}}: IPA(key): /abadjano/, [a.β̞a.ð̞ja.no̞]

Other words (mostly loanwords) might also require respellings:

  • {{eu-IPA|Meksiko}}: IPA(key): /meks̺iko/, [me̞k.s̺i.ko̞]
  • {{eu-IPA|Yoseba}}: IPA(key): /jos̺eba/, [jo̞.s̺e̞.β̞a]

This template can't handle assimilation across word boundaries. For example, for bat-batean and ez zara require the following respellings:

  • {{eu-IPA|bapatean}}: IPA(key): /bapatean/, [ba.pa.t̪e̞.ãn]
  • {{eu-IPA|etzara}}: IPA(key): /et͡s̻aɾa/, [e̞.t͡s̻a.ɾa]
