This template is used to provide literal translations into English in etymology sections, mostly for phrases.

It is not meant as a catch-all template to provide literal translations. Instead, the parameter |lit= should be used wherever possible, including inside etymology sections. In the rare case where a standalone literal translation outside the etymology section is needed, the template {{qlit}} should be used instead.

A similarly named template is {{&lit}}.
