This template pluralizes an English word (specified as |1=) according to the standard English rules:

1. If the word ends in -s, -x, -z, -ch or -sh, add -es.
2. If the word ends in a consonant + -y, convert the final -y to -ies.
3. Otherwise, add -s.

If the word is in the form of a link, the text within the link is properly pluralized without affecting the link destination.
