Authorship

[edit]

@Sgconlaw: The advertisement states, “It is necessary, however, to acquaint the reader that the plan and first portion of the work only are the production of the late Mrs. Maclean (L. E. L.).” The Wikiquote page supports this statement—“The first volume of this novel was received in New York shortly prior to the author's death. It was completed by another in accordance with the author's intentions but without those epigrammatic statements that were so much her territory.” I suppose listing L. E. L. as the author of the first volume and the rest as by her (unknown) friend would be correct? J3133 (talk) 18:41, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@J3133: I wasn't sure if "first portion" meant exactly the first volume of the printed text, but if you think it's clear enough go for it. — Sgconlaw (talk) 18:43, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@J3133: On the other hand, thinking about it a bit more, it might seem a little odd if the author of volumes II and III just appears as "[anonymous collaborator]". — Sgconlaw (talk) 18:47, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw: Wikipedia also states, “On her death, she left a list of projected works. Besides the novel Lady Anne Granard (first volume completed), [].” I suppose “anonymous collaborator” can be changed to something else. J3133 (talk) 18:50, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@J3133: "anonymous collaborator of Letitia Elizabeth Landon"? — Sgconlaw (talk) 18:55, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw: I had written “anonymous friend of Letitia Elizabeth Landon” but changed it to your suggestion. J3133 (talk) 18:58, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@J3133: great! Thanks. — Sgconlaw (talk) 19:53, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
