@J3133: I'm unsure as to what should be done about this template. Nabokov died in 1977 so in jurisdictions which adopt the "author's lifetime plus 70 years" rule, his works enter the public domain in 2047. India has an "author's lifetime plus 60 years" rule, which means Nabokov's works enter the public domain in 2037. I mention India because there is still a freely accessible version of Lolita on the Internet Archive from a scan from a copy of the book in the Allahabad Agricultural Institute. It is published in London by Widenfeld and Nicholson, possibly in 1978, but I suppose this copy is also vulnerable to being taken down as a copyright violation.
The safer option would be to use this 1955 American edition. Readers will need to borrow the work from the Internet Archive in order to see it in full. Regardless of which alternative version of the work is used, the pagination is different from the version currently used by the template, so all uses of the template will need to be updated.
What do you think? — Sgconlaw (talk) 18:21, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw: I think we should use the safer option to prevent copyright violations. I can update the uses of the template. J3133 (talk) 18:25, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@J3133: Yes, that's what I think too. I'm assuming the American edition is OK since there are safeguards to prevent people from downloading (and sharing) the complete work. However, it depends on the eventual outcome of Hachette v. Internet Archive. If IA loses the final appeal, then it won't be allowed to offer even the borrowing model. In that scenario only works which are in the public domain can remain on the site. — Sgconlaw (talk) 18:32, 13 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@J3133: OK, I have updated the template with the 1st American edition (1958). You can go ahead and update the uses of the template. I have already updated philistine and logodaedaly as they were used in the template documentation. — Sgconlaw (talk) 14:17, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
