Design notes[edit]
  • The definition and scope of nonprofit perhaps needs clarification. Relations of nonprofit to NGO, political party, charity and church need clarification: all intuitively meet the definition of being not for profit.
  • WordNet has "nonprofit" and NGO, both subclasses of organization. NGO is not a subclass of nonprofit. An example of NGO is Red Cross. No example of nonprofit is given. A political party is not made for profit, but WordNet does not have it as a nonprofit. WordNet has church as indirect hyponym of organization and not of nonprofit.
  • NCIT distinguishes nonprofit organization from non-profit corporation, the latter being a species of corporation, the former not.
  • Wikidata distinguishes NPO from NGO, where NGO is a subclass of NPO.
  • This entry tentatively follows the model of Wikidata by ranking NGO as hyponym of NPO, contrary to WordNet. More research needed.
