Phonology[edit]

Dialects for which phonological data can likely be found:

  • Standard Delhi Hindi (also Kauravi, Khadiboli) done already
  • Braj - representative of rural Western Hindi
  • Awadhi - representative of rural Eastern Hindi

Awadhi[edit]

  • /eː/ ~ /jɑː/
  • /oː/ ~ /wɑ:/ replace : with ː, invalid IPA characters (:)
  • /[o/e]ːC/ invalid IPA characters ([/]C) ~ /[o/e]Cː/ invalid IPA characters ([/]C)

Bagheli[edit]

  • /e/, /o/ ~ /i/, /u/

Bundeli[edit]

  • All vowels are higher
  • Ending schwa preserved?

Braj[edit]

  • (e) = (ai) = diphthong
  • (o) = (au) = diphthong
  • (ya) usually /d͡ʒ/ (except pronouns)
  • (va) usually /b/ (except pronouns, inconsistent in verb endings)
  • क्ष (kṣ) uncertain... usually /kʰ/, /t͡ʃʰ/?
  • (śa) is /s/
  • (ṣa) is /kʰ/ (except श्री (śrī), and likely other conjuncts)
  • to investigate:
    • (la), (ra) interchangeable?
    • Phonemic quality is different for some other consonants

Haryanvi[edit]

  • /a/, /i/ ~ /e/
