Phonology[edit]
Dialects for which phonological data can likely be found:
Standard Delhi Hindi (also Kauravi, Khadiboli)done already- Braj - representative of rural Western Hindi
- Awadhi - representative of rural Eastern Hindi
Awadhi[edit]
- /eː/ ~ /jɑː/
- /oː/ ~ /wɑ:/ replace : with ː, invalid IPA characters (:)
- /[o/e]ːC/ invalid IPA characters ([/]C) ~ /[o/e]Cː/ invalid IPA characters ([/]C)
Bagheli[edit]
- /e/, /o/ ~ /i/, /u/
Bundeli[edit]
- All vowels are higher
- Ending schwa preserved?
Braj[edit]
- ए (e) = ऐ (ai) = diphthong
- ओ (o) = औ (au) = diphthong
- य (ya) usually /d͡ʒ/ (except pronouns)
- व (va) usually /b/ (except pronouns, inconsistent in verb endings)
- क्ष (kṣ) uncertain... usually /kʰ/, /t͡ʃʰ/?
- श (śa) is /s/
- ष (ṣa) is /kʰ/ (except श्री (śrī), and likely other conjuncts)
- to investigate:
- ल (la), र (ra) interchangeable?
- Phonemic quality is different for some other consonants
