Re: etymology 2 One of the commentators on the Merriam Webster website mentions coming across this in The Pink Maple House (I assume by Christine Noble Govan).

I am reading "The Pink Maple House", copyright 1950 and read this sentence "Here, lamb, take this basket and scrooge under the van, if you can, and put it in the car." I had never heard this word... so I wanted to see definition.
