Fencing

  • Hi there. I think you are confusing English and French sections here. It is made more confusing by the use of French terms by fencers in English-speaking countries. My understanding is that a fencer calls touché to acknowledge that he has been hit, but the referee calls touche. I don't think anyone uses the infinitive (toucher). You are correct. The fencer says touché "(I am) touched"; and the referee says touche "(a) touch."
I don't, however, understand your edit. touché and touche are different tenses, they're not "alternative spellings".
