Apostrophe

[edit]

Hello. You say that U+2019 is not an apostrophe:

The usage in the (e.g.) fr.wikt might be considered incorrect, as U+2019 is not apostrophe, and thus shouldn't be in the entry title (the spelling of the word), but is rather used (improperly) to style it in typesetting (most notably MS Word), and people have come to think it is an apostrophe in spite of the standards specification. …

However, the official Unicode document for U+2000-206F sais this (U+2019) is the preferred character to use for apostrophe. — TAKASUGI Shinji 05:12, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

That is quite odd. It is a right-single-quotation-mark. (as it says) Do they mean in typesetting? It certainly isn't preferred to the standard apostrophe anywhere else.
In any case, the issue here is getting the links to redirects to work, so we can deal with the fr.wikt doing these differently from all of the other wikts. Robert Ullmann 05:30, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
They also say in the official document for U+0000-007F that U+0027 (') is neutral (vertical) glyph with mixed usage and 2019 ’ is preferred for apostrophe. In other words, they recommend to use U+2019 for both the apostrophe and the right single quotation mark. It’s not odd at all. We french Wiktionarians just follow the Unicode standard. — TAKASUGI Shinji 07:23, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
