However, I don't think it's necessary to apply for the bot user group right now. I created that account mainly to separate automated edits from my manual edits, but since that's not permitted without the bot flag, I'll switch back to my main account for further bot edits. Doesn't Wiktionary:BOT say "if you think you have a task likely to be done much more easily by a bot, try using Pywikibot under your own account and see if it helps"? I'm interpreting this sentence and the following one as: use the bot on your own account first, and if necessary apply for a bot account so that it doesn't spam recent changes; if applying for a bot account is not necessary, continue operating the bot on your own account.

But, if using a bot on the main account should only be for testing purposes, I suppose I'll have to go through the application process. I'm just reluctant to make this move early on since I have not made much edits, so I don't have high hopes for a convincing application. PetraMagna (talk) 07:14, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Your interpretation is somewhat wrong. What it's referring to is that if one finds a task that could be done by a bot, running some test edits on your main account could help gauge whether the task is actually bottable or not. It does not mean that you're allowed to run a bot on your main account (or on a bot account without a bot flag) on a long-term basis. — SURJECTION ^{/ T / C / L /} 07:24, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for your time. If you don't mind answering, suppose I publish the source code for the bot I ran and apply for a bot account, will you vote in favor of it? I'm somewhat tempted to try it now, though as I said before it doesn't seem like a good idea.

Regardless of your answer, I'll still continue to edit on wiktionary and apply for a bot account when I feel that I've built enough trust in the community. PetraMagna (talk) 08:10, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

I don't usually partake in votes too much unless they concern something I'm particularly interested in, and Latin non-lemma entries aren't one of my particular fields of interest. Just FYI, bots edits must adhere to WT:NORM. Your bot put whitespace where it shouldn't be, eg == Latin == instead of ==Latin== JeffDoozan (talk) 00:16, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the information and for correcting those issues with your bot. It was a pretty bad idea on my part to try write a bot after less than 10 edits on Wiktionary.

I also noticed that I added blank lines after headings out of habit for some of my edits, which is against number 2 of WT:NORM#Headings, so it's good to know about this page before I make more edits against this rule. I searched through the pages I edited with ==\n\n[^=] and corrected the pages in the main namespace that matched this pattern. Hopefully I didn't miss anything.
