US spellings

[edit]

Why do you edit entries only to change the terms they use into using their US spellings? — surjection?09:17, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

US English is more widely spoken and more efficient. If you insist on retaining the UK spelling, then please add it alongside the US English spelling
Wiktionary standardizes English lemmas either on the UK or US spelling. While the division is somewhat arbitrary, entries in other languages should always point to the main lemma. — surjection?09:56, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
That's understandable, but shouldn't users searching for those terms have access to common variations? I don't think it hurts to include both versions.
You weren't including both versions but simply changing all UK spellings to US spellings regardless of which one the "proper" dictionary entry was under. While beneficial in cases where the US spelling did have the main entry, in some entries (like kunniakomppania, synnyttäjä) this was not the case, and worst of all, you kept edit warring to revert your changes back even after I undo'd your changes and explained why I did so. — surjection?16:43, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. But if you'll remember in the case of kunniakomppania, I edited it afterwards to include both variations. In the case of synnyttäjä, it seemed is if you edited it very shortly after I had done so, almost as if my edits were being followed. Perhaps it was a coincidence. But either way, when you edited it you simply changed it back to its previous state rather than including both forms like I had with kunniakomppania so I didn't take the time to edit it and only undid your changes. In the future, can it be agreed that both forms should be included if there are differences? It doesn't make sense to only use one form when both are common and the lemmas are arbitrary.
Yes, you eventually did. The reason I edit shortly after is because I often patrol recent changes in real time as done by most users with fewer edits or anonymous editors under IP addresses. I'm not personally against having both forms (but the first of the two should be the one with the main entry), even though an argument could be made against it since it can end up looking pretty cluttered. — surjection?19:56, 14 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
