Forms of Telchines[edit]

Hello Theeddiebear888! I wanted to talk to you about the article Telchinis since it looks like we disagreed about whether it should be moved to Telchines, and I certainly don't want to start an edit war. Hopefully, my latest edit makes my thoughts clearer. Based on the attested forms starting with Telchin in the PHI Latin Texts corpus, the classical Latin usage shows a plural nominative form Telchīnĕs and a plural accusative form Telchīnăs. From these forms, we can infer that the name declines as a Greek third-declension consonant stem. If the noun were an i-stem, we'd expect those plural forms to be Telchīneis, Telchīnēs, or Telchīnīs instead. From what I can see, L&S does not list the noun as singular at all; the L&S entry, which can be found at Perseus or Logeion, only gives the form as "Telchīnes, um, m., = Τελχῖνες,"

The latinlexicon website does give a form Telchinis and a note "mostly plural", but I don't know where they are getting that from, and I'm inclined to think it is an error. If "Telchinis" is a real form, it makes sense as a Latin-type genitive singular, but not so much as a nominative singular. The nominative singular in Greek has the form Τελχίν or Τελχίς.

Since the nominative singular has at least two possible forms, and I haven't found an example of either being used in Latin, I feel like it's better to put the page at the plural form (like L&S does); would you agree?--Urszag (talk) 02:22, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Urszag! You actually bring up some really good points about Telchines, and I realize I probably should have done more digging on the issue than undoing most of the work you put into the article. I had originally assumed that it was singular, but after cross-checking L&S and Gaffiot, both list only the plural form, so I believe that the lemma is probably Telchīnes here rather than Telchīnis.
I do want to take the time to sincerely apologize for deleting most of your work on the article without giving it a second thought, and I also want to thank you for taking the time to reach out to me about this. Theeddiebear888 (talk) 05:50, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for creating the page! The name seems to turn up in a pretty interesting set of passages. I enjoyed learning about it.--Urszag (talk) 06:47, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
