Etymology

[edit]

From Old Frisian word, from Proto-Germanic *wurdą. Cognates include West Frisian wurd. For the sporadic loss of w- before a back vowel compare uur (to become) and uuni (to dwell), in both of which cases Danish influence is ruled out.
