Wiktionary:Changing username

Before filing a request please consider the following:

  • If the change is small, such as adding or removing numbers or changing vowels, it is normally better to change your signature to alter your appearance.
  • It is quicker and easier to simply create a new account and link to your old contributions. Dead accounts are harmless.
  • Signatures and other hardcoded text will not be changed, you will have to manually edit to get rid of them.
  • Single Unified Login: To usurp an existing account:
    1. Please add {{subst:usurpation requested}} or similar to their talk page. If that account has email enabled, please email them and explain the situation. Wait for a week after giving notification for any objections, then post the result here.
    2. Please post a link to a diff in a project where you are active. The diff should be an edit made from your account to a talk page or similar acknowledging that yes, it's you making this request. See this example.
  • You are asking for a favour; please be polite and remain patient. In particular, do not pester bureaucrats.

Once you've decided that a change is the best way forward:

  1. Check Special:Listusers to see whether your desired name is not already taken. While it is possible to hijack existing user accounts without their permission, this is undesirable and will require a special reason.
  2. Click add your request and explain clearly why you want to make the change, you must sign your request from your old account.
  3. Wait patiently for one of our bureaucrats to deal with your request.

Once fulfilled[edit]

Your old account will not exist anymore. All edits and other user data (including preferences and watchlist) from your old account will be reattributed to your new account. You can log in with your old password. A log of these changes is kept at Special:Log/renameuser and the requests are archived here.

  1. You should move your old User: and User_talk: pages to your new user name; don't just copy the content.
  2. If you wish you can recreate your old account and request that an administrator block it to prevent other users from impersonating you.

It's a hassle for people to ping my Devanagari username and I also could do with a simpler log-in process. -- माधवपंडित (talk) 02:41, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Interesting name choice, @माधवपंडित. I would have thought you would have gone for Madhav, hah! Why Baghdad? --Victar (talk) 21:17, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
@Victar: Haha, "madhavpandit" was my first choice but I felt it'd be quite bland. Bhagadatta was the name of an Indian prince and I fancy that name as it has an exact equivalent in Old Iranian XD -- माधवपंडित (talk) 05:16, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks! :-) -- Bhagadatta (talk) 06:07, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bhagadatta Cool. :) --Victar (talk) 13:48, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Username change. Thanks in advance. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 10:10, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Note: 167k edits, I think this has to go through Phabricator. - TheDaveRoss 12:15, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
I'd refuse it personally, Dave. This guy's already had one name change - more than enough for anybody --I learned some phrases (talk) 12:26, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
I see. At least for now, I retract my request. I don't require this name change anymore. (I'm striking the section title now.)
In my defense, I changed my username in 2011 so I was thinking maybe I could change it again because 8 years passed already. But there's no need to worry about it now. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 01:23, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
@Daniel Carrero: It isn't a timing thing, there are just special considerations for users with large edit counts. I am also not a 'crat, so it is certainly not up to me, I was just pointing out that Wikimedia requires name changes for accounts as active as yours be done by systems people who can keep track of the operation on the server. - TheDaveRoss 01:39, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
@TheDaveRoss: Alright. When I created this thread, I wasn't aware yet that my name change might have to go through Phabricator, or that it might need to be done by systems people as you said. So thank you for the new information.
I wonder how many edits I had back then in 2011 when Stephen changed my username for the first time (from "Daniel." to "Daniel Carrero").
That said, I find it interesting that @I learned some phrases talked about refusing my request. I thought there might be an actual timing thing. As in, I see why we most likely can't change our usernames everyday. But maybe after 8 years I thought I had a chance to change it. (Still, just to repeat again, don't worry as I don't require this username change anymore.) --Daniel Carrero (talk) 13:54, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
