From Old Galician / Old Galician-Portuguese avelãa, from Latin abellana (filbert, hazelnut), from nux abellana ("nut from Avella"), from Abella (Avella, a city in the Campania region of Italy). Cognate with Portuguese avelã, Spanish abellana.
