Etymology

[edit]

Augmented variant of the earlier granciu. Possibly from an Occitan and/or Norman stratum, because of the palatalization and sonorization of the initial /k-/ sound. Ultimately from Latin cancer, cancrum (crab). Cognate with Catalan cranc/carranc, Occitan cranc, Galician cáncaro, (cángaro, cancro, cangrio), French chancre, Spanish cangrejo, Portuguese carango, Italian granchio, Venetian cancaro. Doublet of garanciu, otherwise just an orthographical variant of this latter. Compare the morphology of agriḍḍu for more.
