Etymology[edit]
Either a learned borrowing from Sanskrit अलस (alasa, “lazy”) (compare *ālase), or from Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (“heat”), as in a fever. In the latter case, compare Irish allas (“sweat”).
