Plains Cree

Alternative forms

The possible combinations are made: with or without "pointed vowels", with or without a connecting -o- between amisk and wâciy, with or without a space or dash between wâciy and wâskahikan, and with or without the final -ihk. Note also that long vowels in Standard Roman Orthography can be indicated with a macron (for example: wâskahikan) or with a bar (wāskahikan)

Etymology

From amiskwâciy (Beaver Hills) +‎ wâskahikanihk (at the house [fur trade post]) or "at the Beaver Hills House", in turn from amisk (beaver) +‎ wâciy (hills) and wâskahikan (house) +‎ -ihk (at). The Cree term wâskahikanihk (at the house) was also used in other regions as the names for Grouard, Alberta and Cumberland House, Saskatchewan. Compare Ojibwe waakaa'igan (house, building).
