Verb

ankri (present ankras, past ankris, future ankros, conditional ankrus, volitive ankru)

1. to anchor; be anchored; drop anchor (moor a ship using an anchor)

   La ŝiparo ankras apud la insulo.

   The fleet is anchored off the island.

   La ŝipo estis ankrita en la golfeto.

   The ship was anchored in the bay.

2. to anchor (secure firmly in position—literal and figurative senses)

   ankri librobretaron al la vando

   to anchor a bookshelf to the wall

   Tiaj sintenoj estas ankritaj en la klasa strukturo.

   Such attitudes are anchored in the class structure.

Usage notes

It is not clear whether this verb is transitive (ankri la ŝipon) or intransitive (la ŝipo ankris). Both usages are found in the literature, and the PV/PIV have changed the definition back and forth over the years.
