Etymology

From Old Norse bófi (boy), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bō- (close [male] relation). Cognate with Dutch boef (mischievous boy, rascal; also thief), Middle Low German bōve, German Bube (boy, rascal, knave, rogue), dialectal Swedish babbe (little boy) and English bub.
