Borrowed from Arabic بَرْقُوق (barqūq, plums), Byzantine Greek βερικοκκία (berikokkía, pl.), from Ancient Greek πραικὄκιον (praikókion), from Late Latin (persica) praecocia (pl.), (mālum) praecoquum, neuter of Latin (persicum) praecox (literally over-ripe peach).
