Borrowing from Arabic بَرْقُوق(barqūq, plums), a borrowing from Byzantine Greek βερικοκκία(berikokkía, pl.), from Ancient Greek πραικὄκιον(praikókion), from Late Latin (persica) praecocia(pl.), (mālum) praecoquum, neuter of Latin (persicum) praecox(literally over-ripe peach).
