Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *wahiR. Phonetic developments can be summarised as the following: *wəir (from early *wəhiR with irregular vowel change) added with intrusive (> *wəyər), then dissimilated into *wəyor and monophthongised into *wior. Finally, *w was subject into fortition and *r became *l in most instances (biol). Cognate with Malay air, Lampung Api way, Sundanese cai, etc.
