From Proto-Germanic *butmaz (ground), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰmḗn (earth, bottom). Cognate with Old Frisian boden (ground), Old High German bodam (ground, floor), Old Norse botn (floor, ground). Doublet of botm (bottom).
