From Old Swedish borghmæstare, borghamæstare, borgharamæstare, from Middle Low German borgemester, borgermester, equivalent to borg +‎ mästare. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål borgermester, Norwegian Nynorsk borgarmeister, Danish borgmester (whence also Greenlandic borgmesteri), German Bürgermeister, Dutch burgemeester, English boroughmaster.
