From Proto-Albanian *bōlna, identical with Thracian βόλινθος id.[1].Alternatively from Byzantine Greek βούβαλος ‎(boúbalos).[2]; compare also Latin būbalus, both from Ancient Greek βούβαλος ‎(boúbalos, buffalo).
