Probably borrowed from East Norse. Cognate with Swedish bänk and Danish bænk. Also known in a runic 19th century spelling in a Trøndelag dialect compound term ᚢᛰᚳᛒᛆᛰᚳᚴ (venbænk, bench for friends), with rune ᚴ having a tailed form typical for only Trøndelag. [1] [2]
