Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German and Old High German bank, from Proto-West Germanic *banki, from Proto-Germanic *bankiz. Cognate with German Bank, Dutch bank, English bench, Swedish bänk, Icelandic bekkur. The expected form Bank is attested locally, that with umlaut is from the older plural and oblique singular (Middle High German benke). Doublet of Bank (bank).
