Uncertain. Generally believed to be based on a translation of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Greek κυνοκέφαλος ("kinokefalos"). (See cap and câine). Also, possibly from a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Medieval Latin *capcanus.
