Etymology 1
From a Vulgar Latin *cicāla (compare Spanish cigala, cigarra), from Latin cicāda. The hypothetical original Romanian form, *cicară, was probably influenced phonetically by the unrelated word below. Doublet of cicadă, a borrowing.
