Most likely from Vulgar Latin *cisellum, from Latin caesellum, from caesus, past participle of caedere (to cut). Less likely from Vulgar Latin scisellum, from Latin scindō. Compare Portuguese cinzel, Catalan cisell, French ciseau, Italian cesello, English chisel.
