Italian

Etymology

Uncertain. Probably from a Vulgar Latin root *cyatula, an alteration of Latin cotyla, cotula[1][2] (influenced by cyathus (small ladle))[3], from Ancient Greek κοτύλη (kotúlē, cup, beaker) (cf. also κότυλος (kótulos, (frying) pan)), perhaps cognate with Sanskrit चत्वाल (catvāla, hole, cavity), or less likely perhaps from a root *cytola, also of Greek origin. Cf. also Romanian ciutură.
