Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Possibly from a Vulgar Latin root *cicculum, diminutive of Latin ciccum, or alternatively a derivative of Romanian ciuc [1], cognate to Albanian çukë[2], with South Slavic and Baltic cognates as well. See Proto-Slavic *čuka. The reconstructed root referred to sharp points.
