Etymology[edit]

Often considered to be from Greek κουκουβάγια ‎(koukouvágia), but seems linked to a number of foreign cognates, including Albanian kukuvajë, Italian coccoveggia, cuccumeggia, Calabrian cucugmau, cuccuvella. Other theories include Latin *cucumella, or a creative or onomatopoetic expression.
