Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *čajьka. The sense of a boat is to be presumed a semantic loan from Ukrainian ча́йка (čájka), given that this word, in any language but Ukrainian, is only put as an exotism for a vessel ascribed to the Zaporozhian Cossacks.
