[edit]From Italian capitano (itself from Late Latin capitāneus), entering in the Middle Ages, probably through a Levantine route; cf. Greek καπετάνιος (kapetánios), Turkish kaptan. Compare also Aromanian cãpitan. Doublet of căpătâi.
