From del (part) +‎ tage (take). Partial calque of German teilnehmen, itself probably a calque of Latin participō (to partake of, participate in); compare corresponding calques such as Low German deelnehmen, deilnähmen, Dutch deelnemen, English take part, Icelandic taka þátt, Swedish delta and Norwegian Bokmål delta.
