Etymology

Borrowed from French devancer.

devancar (present devancas, past devancis, future devancos, conditional devancus, imperative devancez)

  1. (transitive) to outrun, outstrip, outdo, to distance

Usage notes

Preterirar is used when the subject goes past an object that stands still, but devancar indicates that the object moves as well, and moves in the same direction as the subject.
