Etymology[edit]

Compound of deviasi (deviation) +‎ standar (standard), calque of Dutch standaarddeviatie (standard deviation), from English standard deviation. Coined by English mathematician Karl Pearson in 1894 in his paper "On the dissection of asymmetrical frequency curves".
