Apparently a diminutive form. Compare Arabic دَعْسة (daʿsa, “footprint”), which might refer to the oval form of the boat. Further ضاغِصة (ḍāḡiṣa, “kneecap; shallow water”), and غاصَ (ḡāṣa, “to dive”), غائِص (ḡāʾiṣ, “hull, underwater parts of a boat”). A prefixed ت (t) could have been voiced by a following غ (ḡ) in Maltese. None of this is particularly convincing, however.
