Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Apparently a diminutive form. Compare Arabic دَعْسة(daʿsa, footprint), which might refer to the oval form of the boat. Further ضاغِصة(ḍāḡiṣa, kneecap; shallow water), and غاصَ(ḡāṣa, to dive), غائِص(ḡāʾiṣ, hull, underwater parts of a boat). A prefixed ت(t) could have been voiced by a following غ() in Maltese. None of this is particularly convincing, however.
