From Proto-Iranian *Hdantán- (compare Persian دندان (dandân), Baluchi دنتان (dantán), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬥𐬙𐬀𐬥 (dantan), 𐬛𐬁𐬙𐬁 (dātā)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hdánts (compare Sanskrit दत् (dát), Hindi दाँत (dā̃t)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃dónts (“tooth”) (compare Lithuanian dantis, Greek δόντι (dónti), French dent, Welsh dant, English tooth).
