Albanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Attested historically with various genders and definite forms, most notably djep and djebë. These allow for a reconstruction of Common Albanian *dʲeb(i), older *dʰʲebi, which was inherited from Proto-Albanian *dᶻ́ʰʲebi-, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *j́ʰébi-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰebʰ(y)i- (container), from the root Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéHbʰ- (to grasp, hold).[1]

Historically said to derive from Proto-Albanian *deupa, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewp-, though this does not explain the -je- diphthong in place of an expected -a- (*-ew- > *-aw- > *-a-).

A borrowing from Ancient Greek δέπας (dépas)[2] can also be excluded as it would have resulted in *djepë instead.

Finally, Hyllested reconstructs Proto-Indo-European *swep- (to sleep), though this requires a controversial and debated change of PIE *swV- > Alb. *dV-.
