From Proto-Germanic *dōg- (day), long-grade stem of *dagaz (day). Cognate with Old Norse dœgr, Gothic *𐌳𐍉𐌲𐍃 (*dōgs) (in compounds); from the same Germanic root as dæġ, from Proto-Germanic *dagaz.
