From Middle Welsh ebawl, from Proto-Brythonic *epālos (compare Cornish ebol, Breton ebeul), diminutive of *epos ‎(horse) (compare obsolete Welsh ep), from Proto-Celtic *ekʷos (compare Irish each), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos.
