Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Sicilian elmu and/or Italian elmo, both from Latin helmus, from Frankish *helm, from Proto-Germanic *helmaz. The Italo-Romance word is usually restricted to military helmets; the broader use in Maltese may be due to influence by English helmet, eventually from the same Germanic word.
