Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἐπιστήμη (epistḗmē, science, knowledge), from ἐπίσταμαι (epístamai, I know) +‎ -logie from -λογία (-logía, discourse), from λέγω (légō, I speak). The term was introduced into English by the Scottish philosopher James Frederick Ferrier (1808-1864).
