Etymology

Perhaps originally from Slavic or Old Church Slavonic еретикъ (eretikŭ), (cf. Greek αιρετικός (airetikós)), from Ancient Greek αἱρετικός (hairetikós). It may have been later reinforced or re-borrowed through French hérétique or Latin haereticus.
