From Vulgar Latin *ērīciō, ērīciōnem, from Latin ēricius, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰḗr (to bristle). Compare Occitan eriçon, French hérisson, Romansch erizun. Alternatively, from an earlier form *eriç (compare Occitan eriç, Old Occitan aritz, Italian riccio, Spanish erizo), later suffixed with , from Latin -ōnem.
