Italian

Etymology

From the old past participle of the verb ergere (now erso), probably corresponding to a Vulgar Latin root *erctus (as the past participle of *ergō, ergere), for Latin ērectus, perfect participle of ērigō. Compare Spanish yerto. See also Italian eretto.
